Kamala Harris stumbles and falls all over her own stand on decriminalizing border crossers

Does this mean we can all go out and rob banks? You said we shouldn’t be treated like criminals if we break the law.

During an interview on “The View,” Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris attempted to clarify her position on illegal immigration and border security, but ended up leaving viewers with more questions than answers.

Meghan McCain pressed Harris on her hand-raising at the first Democrat debate, which appeared to indicate that she was in favor of “decriminalizing border crossings.” McCain also asked if the candidate stood in solidarity with Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s idea of abolishing the Department of Homeland Security.

“That is not correct,” Harris began. “I’m not in favor of decriminalizing, um, or, or, not having, um, consequence for–we have to keep–let me just be very clear.” She then goes on to place herself on both sides of the issue, while not being clear in any way.

“We have to have a secure border, but I am in favor of saying that we’re not going to treat people who are undocumented across the border as criminals. That’s correct. That is correct. And what we have got to do is we cannot have anymore policy like we have under this current President that is about inhumane conduct, that is about putting babies in cages, that is about separating children from their parents, and we have got to have policy that is about passing comprehensive immigration reform with a pathway towards citizenship, shutting down these private detention facilities-“

Watch the video below:

“You gotta play by the rules, but you can’t treat people like criminals,” Harris concludes.

So you can’t treat people who break federal law like criminals? Harris suggests making illegal immigration a “civil enforcement issue, but not a criminal enforcement issue,” but isn’t that what happens when you break the law? It becomes a “criminal enforcement issue”?

As one Twitter user noted, Harris almost immediately contradicts herself on her own stance, saying she wouldn’t “decriminalize” illegal border crossings, then saying that she wouldn’t treat people who cross the border illegally as “criminals.”

How is it not decriminalization to not punish those who break the law? Are we just going to give illegal immigrants a wink and a nod while we tell them they shouldn’t cross the border without the proper paperwork? How are Americans supposed to trust a government that cherry-picks how and when they are going to enforce our laws?

Hopefully Harris is made to answer questions on this interview at the next debate, because every American is now more unclear on her stance than they were before her meandering, substance-less answer to Meghan’s question.

It should also be noted that Harris did not answer the secondary question as to whether she agrees with AOC’s stance on abolishing the DHS. Troublesome, to say the least.
