THREE men have been killed and nine people were left injured in a Halloween party mass shooting after two hooded gunmen opened fire at a Los Angeles house.
People were warned to avoid Long Beach in California as residents reported hearing multiple gunshots “sounding like fireworks going off”.
Nine people were found suffering gunshot wounds in last night’s mass shooting
Emergency services were met with chaotic and distressing scenes, and victims had to be treated in a garden in front of the house, next to a nail salon, according to local media.
Police said that two hooded suspects opened fire at the Halloween party, says CBSN Los Angeles. The gunmen are still on the run.
The broadcaster adds that the killers appear to have fired at partygoers outside the property, with “multiple shell casings” reported in a nearby alley.
ABC7 says that “at least three bodies were visible on the ground”.
Up to 20 shots were reportedly fired at the scene.
I definitely heard a lot of shots, and that’s when I started running
Lambert Alcendor, Long Beach resident
The Long Beach Fire Department said crews responded to the shooting at a home located in the 2700 block of 7th Street at 10.44pm local time.
They found 12 patients – three dead men aged in their 20s and nine others who were injured, all of whom have been taken to hospital.
Local media reports that five people are in a serious condition, while four are stable.
In an update, ABC7 reports that of the nine injured victims, seven are women aged between 20 and 49.
Lambert Alcendor, 21, told the Press-Telegram that while walking to a liquor store at 7th Street, he noticed a white car suddenly swerve in front of a nail salon, before hearing 20 to 30 shots ring out.
He fled the scene, and ducked behind a car.
Lambert said: “I definitely heard a lot of shots, and that’s when I started running.”
‘SHOTS LIKE FIREWORKS’
Oscar Cancio, who lives in the area, heard gunshots which initially “sounded like fireworks going off”.
But, after noticing “helicopters and squad cars scrambling” in the area, he became concerned about his neighbours.
Oscar then saw the bodies of three people in front of the home where the mass shooting was carried out, and wounded victims being stretchered away to waiting ambulances.
He said other partygoers, still dressed in Halloween costumes, limped away from the property.
Oscar added: “You don’t really hear about big shootings here, so for this to happen in our neighbourhood feels awful.”
A spokesman for the fire department, Jake Heflin said: “Obviously this is a tragic event in our city.”

Police said they are investigating whether the shooting was random, or whether the gunmen and victims knew each other.
Last night’s mass shooting comes just three days after a gunman opened fire at an unsanctioned university Halloween party in Texas.
He said a total of 16 people sought medical treatment for various injuries including getting cut by glass while running out of the venue.
